Body Types

I was starting at a graphic for Dragon Age II at http://bioware.files.wordpress.com/2010 ... _races.jpg
and I was truck how much it resembled this: http://www.visionlily.com/wp-content/up ... -Graph.png
Dwarves, humans and elves, really

So is their a 'root race' in fantasy settings, where selective breeding slowly branches the race into three? Like in Eddings, where the various races of Angoraks stop interbreeding, and you wind up with Murgul, Nadrak's and Thul's.

Also: A far more interesting take on the endo/meso/ecto dichotomy: http://weblogs.wpix.com/news/local/morn ... im0602.jpg

Interesting. As a related note, in the references shannan sent me, as well as the anatomy-for-comics book that I've been drawing out of, they always use what they call "8-head theory," that the body is eight heads long. I have the hardest time doing proportion that tall, though. It always looks freakishly long to me. It would be very interesting to put together references on the various body types for arting, in a big book of poses.

In response to Matt', I think it depends on your author. Brooks made the distinction very clear in his books: The Shannarra series is far, far in the future and dwarves, gnomes, etc. evolved from human type through environmental pressures over time. Elves were an older, parrallel race, and even through he never said it in the first 7 I read, I would be surprised if there wasn't an ancient race that split into even the elf-human lines.

I have to get back to work, but I have a lot more to say on this.

Graphic is useful bit: NYC psych prof spends a decade observing people, decides there are only 7 major body types, largely split between 3 'ideals'.

Someone got a bunch of Olympic athletes to pose. It's crazy how different weight lifters look from football players look from marathon runners!
