Weapon Images

All right, so one of the key image sets that we've needed in this game for a very, very long time is a list of weapons for the equipment chapter.

It' a little confusing, with categories and sub-categories, and the color-job was a little fast-and-dirty, with the line art less crisp than I might like it, but it actually represents a significant amount of effort to get it this far.

The idea is to include the most common archetypes for players to choose from, set in the categories that are listed in the weapon-list, with a few options for most of the more diverse options.

Now, there are lots of more obscure weapons from history that aren't there, (just check out the wikipedia article on types of swords: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_swords ) and some more basic weapons that aren't here, (falchion, etc.) but this is pretty comprehensive for our purposes. I tried to include enough styles to give inspiration, but not so many as to overwhelm.

Anyway, feedback is welcome. Check it out. This is one more massive step toward finalizing the project.

For Matt:

The slayer and great cleaver are not historical weapons. They are, however, very common fantasy archetypes and make for good images. The more I think about it, if we spent as much time hacking up scaled monsters as people in fantasy games did, these kind of swords might have actually existed. The light mace is just a small, short mace. Seems easy enough to throw. I tried to include all of the prominent mace/axe head combo's in one place or another, although it seemed silly to repeat them again and again.

Others I might consider adding:

Jian, in the light swords, can't believe I forgot that one. Stellar imagery.
Flissa, as a sabre, east asian, just plain cool looking, even as a historical weapon.
sword-breaker, as a main gauche?

Jian could go in or out. The jian/dao is just a sword/saber distinction--straight blades vs curved blades.

Flissa....I would avoid adding. Name has no resonance, and it's a pretty standard saber. While outward curve of the blade near the hand as a guard is unique, the 'double curve' of the saber is pretty standard in muslim influenced tribal cultures the world over.

I would not include sword breaker... sword breaker made for 16th century dueling and court swords of great length and minor diameter.

GLADIUS & SPATHA
Anachronistic. Neither used after 1000 AD.
Spatha evolved into knightly/arming/war sword.
If you need a medieval short sword, use the cinquedea.

FENCING SABER
Both terms make the crazy. The former is an anachronism, and the later in accurate.
The sword you are looking for is 'Spadroon'.
http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=10330

epee:smallsword :: foil : saber :: shinai : katana
ie, sport/training swords.
If you are looking for a diminuative of rapier, use 'smallsword'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_sword

Cutlass is s broad-bladed, curved sword.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutlass

Arming sword looks squat.
Arming sword: 90 cm
Longsword: 110 cm
Claymore: 140 cm
Two-handed: 180 cm

Dadao is a wierd inclusion, given the lack of other 'oriental' weapons. As is the Kris.

SHIELDS
Please don't perpetuate the innaccuracies of DnD. There is no such think as a 'Tower shield'. It's a pavise.
Targe is probably over-large. 18-22' diameter. The 'Viking shield' I made has a 36" diameter.
No buckler or fist-shield?

SHORTBOW vs. Longbow - guh.
Please don't perpetuate the innaccuracies of DnD.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SHORT BOW.
'Long' distinguishes the type from the crossbow.
If you are going to have two bows, it should be Long-bow and recurve bow.
Crossbow looks nice.

Double-headed axe is ridiculous.
Two headed axes are forestry tools for cutting down trees and splitting wood.
Check out the lack of double-headed axes under the 'axes as weapons'
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axe

No need for the spike on the single-handed axe.
Patterned after the horseman's ax, I would guess?

Might want to use this instead:
http://www.by-the-sword.com/acatalog/images/cd-183.jpg
Hatchet same issue.

MACES:
'Light mace' should be club, hammer, or mallet.
Bladed mace should be 'flanged' mace.
'Spiked Maul' should be Morning Star.

Whips are not real weapons.

Every time I look at the weapons list, I smack myself upside the head. And again realize you were main-lining DarkStalkers when you decided on it.

Darkstalkers, Darksiders and most importantly, DARK SOULS.

I pushed weapons based on heuristic value, strategic difference and cool factor. History is nice, but fantasy and history are not the same thing.

And scythes are badass.
