I have a wierd twinge to build a mecha rpg. It's like having a sudden impulse to climb K2. Sure, it can be done, but maybe it would be more time, effort and resources than I have right now.

I am not aware of any mecha rpgs. Largely because you can't have one. Giant mecha are for fighting. It's pretty much all they do. They don't hang out in taverns. There is no plausible (relatable) reason for them to go on a quest. And everything they fight would also have to be a giant mecha. At which points, things are kind of implausible.

Mecha are sort of...the personification of modern warfare. An avatar of the military power of an entire nation. It's a battle where personal heroics are still possible.

Naval battleships are a pretty good analogue. They are insanely expensive engines of destruction, but only the most powerful nations ever have more than a few of them, so each can be a 'named' unique. I mean, 1885, Japan's entire navy consisted of 9 ships battleships: 3 cruisers, 3 coastal warships, 2 small cruisers, 1 frigate. And WWII's big 'fate of the nation' battle had about 30.
